The best things in life begin with love. Having met in 5th grade, Verna and Don Shook married in 1942, and began creating a homemade Old Fashioned mix in 1962.
Our parents/grandparents loved to entertain. They enjoyed bringing people together and sharing good times. Making Old Fashioneds to-order at neighborhood card parties, around camp fires and at holiday gatherings became a tradition. The unique blend and flavorful mix has always been met with rave reviews.
Verna and Don’s love affair lasted over 70 years. Even at the age of 90+, they were happiest with family and friends by their side sharing an old fashioned (or two) together.
Five VerDons was formed as a tribute to, and carries on the tradition of what we affectionately call the VerDon Old Fashioned. Produced with love in small batches to maintain its unique taste, VerDon Old Fashioned Mix pays tribute to traditional flavors and the historic, consistent blend of this crafted cocktail.

How did the Old Fashioned get its name?
Back in the early 1800’s, what is now known as the Old Fashioned, was referred to as the Whiskey Cocktail. It was a popular morning beverage used to “cure” ailments such as headaches and nausea (most likely hangovers). Bartenders began experimenting with the blend and soon the drink could taste completely different every time it was ordered. Customers became frustrated and began requesting the Whiskey Cocktail made the “old-fashioned” way.
